The Space Between – The Space Between [EP]

On the album The Space Between the rhyme triumvirate of Ekundayo, Stanza, and Aleon Craft base jump into a billowing pool of sound as laid out by producer/arranger Spittzwell and hash out a set that is stark, beautiful, and well worth any investment needed to take in the art on display. Throughout the project, the three emcees offer up their words in a successive and uninterrupted style that makes it easy to imagine each man performing on a small stage in a gallery – waiting patiently to unload his thoughts before a crowd of engrossed art lovers and head-nodding hip-hop fans. Each emcee’s voice and approach is distinctive (with Ekundayo being more of the aggressor, Craft seeming more laid back, and Stanza shifting between those two points), yet they share a driving “stream of consciousness” rhyme style that meshes well together and keeps things from ever feeling “phoned in”. For his part, producer Spittzwell crafts some stirring backdrops from his compadres to work with, taking his cues from sprawling soul-jazz (see “So Good“), stormy prog-rock (see “Back to Back“), and more. Album highlights include:  a haunting number called “Truth” (which opens with a breathless verse from Ekundayo, closes with some potent, Southern-drawl laced rhymes from Stanza, and is sewn together with soulful notes from Aleon); the sweeping and stirring “So Good” (which offers up a yin & yang view of love & marriage where Stanza plays the pessimist while Ek and Craft are happy swimming in stars); and a ebbing & flowing “remember the times” type joint called “GoldEra“ (that not only features each of the three emcees recalling their individual history with hip-hop, but also features a nice little sax solo at the end that may or may not be Spittzwell or Aleon doing a little bit of showing off). As a group, The Space Between are an airtight unit and their self-titled project absolutely delivers a masterclass in super emceein’ and emotive production.
