On the single “Small Town“, the BK borough’s own Ida Divine finds herself attempting to navigate unfamiliar territory and new relationship dynamics when she and a longtime friend admit to one another that they want and need to be more than just friends. The situation between the two isn’t made any easier by the fact that they are both “alphas” ( or as Divine puts it, “killers”) when it comes to the game of love and now find themselves in a strange sort of holding pattern in the wake of everything that has gone down. The song is one of my favorite tracks from the Divine Timing album and I nearly did a spit take with my coffee when I realized that Ida had put together a video for the track and the news of its release had somehow escaped my attention (I REALLY got get some help running this site). In the video, the Brooklyn soul singer takes on a role akin to a high priestess holding court in a technicolor world of spellbound lovers and fellow brujas. Ida and director Rocko Seymour deliver an engaging and dreamlike production that adds a bit of surreal energy to the songs very grounded subject matter. Dope work all around.
