Valid – The Plum Brandy EP

Detroit‘s own Valid introspects on his life and heritage as the son Serbian immigrants on his latest work of art, The Plum Brandy EP – a six-track suite that features beats and rhymes from Boldy James, Smoke Mardeljano, Ideeyah, Struka, Marvel, Mystee, The Saint and DJ Goce. An airtight and engaging set that strikes a balance between more serious-minded numbers detailing Val‘s experiences growing up in Detroit as the son of immigrants (see the very dope Foreign Forever) and more uprocking jams that celebrate his life and times as a young man and uprising hip-hop artist enjoying life. A fact that makes the project all the more dynamic is how he embraces his Slavic heritage by working with producers and artists from the land of his parents’ birth – even going so far as to make sure that the beats are constructed from samples from Serbia and other former Yugoslavian republics. Standout cuts include a bluesy-but-bumpin ode to his father that’s aptly titled Pops; the heavy hitting “get money” anthem Paper; a flashy and brassy club cut called Uluv; and the previously mentioned life-reflection called Foreign Forever.
