Emon – Free Me [LP]

Emon – Free Me [LP]

As a way of (re)introducing herself to the public, singer Emon (f.k.a Lucille Ghatti) consents to letting those interested in hearing her thoughts on love, relationships, and emotional openness enter into her world on the album Free Me. Along the whole length of the album, Emon serves up welcomed doses of grace and vulnerability – not only in her lyrics but also in her soothing vocals. As lame as this may sound, there’s a real “quiet storm” feel to this album. Not in a “Hey baby, let’s get it on” sort of way, but in more of a “gentleness in the midst of hardness” kind of way. The production on each song fits squarely in a “trap soul” category. Yet the rumbling 808-drums and lean, hip-hop styled instrumentation are greatly softened by Emon‘s tender performances. And where a lot of trap-influenced R&B music tends to focus on explicit sexcapades and living it up in the winner’s circle, Free Me is stacked with unapologetic introspection and an earnest pursuit of personal growth. Standout cuts include a distinctive warning to not throw away a good thing because times are tough called Think About It, the healing and previously released single Seeing Stars“, some airtight straightforwardness in the form of Fluctuate, and a spark of cosmically classy soul that opens the set called Black Matter.
