On her newest release, Lowkey Superstar, Little Rock to L.A. performer Kari Faux conjures up a raw and assertive batch of 808-driven, trap-steeped anthems that find the rapper/singer in full “fxck that, I’m feeling myself” mode. Performing a bit of a 180° turn form last year’s Cry 4 Help ( which to me felt more sobering and self-examining ) this new set gives us a chest-out-proud Kari Faux who feels less concerned with delving into the personal ups and downs of her life and more focused on living in the moment. If this album proves to be polarizing amongst Kari‘s fans, it wouldn’t be surprising. But I doubt fans’ reactions will shackle the young singer’s approach to music in any substantive way. Both albums feel like honest reflections of the woman behind the music, just at different points in her life.
