Succulent, the newest album from singer Be Steadwell, is a completely spellbinding body of work – a set that is steamy and yearning and cool and alluring all at once. Like some well-written erotica, Succulent mixes sex and humor in such a natural and relatable way that I quickly found myself completely wrapped up in Be’s words and had no intentions of pressing “next” or “pause” on my media player. Standouts include the tongue in cheek album opener “Fuccboi” (with its x-rated humor and bubbling beat) the slinky title track “Succulent” (with its erotic wordplay creating very vivid imagery), a simmering and tensely teasing jazz number called “Wait”, and (of course) the crazy funny closing number “Thirst Trap” (which finds a horny and attention-craving Steadwell making less-than-wise decisions involving a smart-phone and a strong internet connection).
