Cole DeGenova’s album Really Human is a shimmering and soulful work of art that’s laid out in a masterful way. Like albums from a different time, there’s real attention to detail and the way the energy ebbs and flows throughout the set is really impressive. There’s slow-burning and spacey soul. There’s peacocky electro-funk. There’s even a call back to the free-spirited and soul-steeped sound made famous by Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin (see “Turn The Screw” ). An absolute winner of an album that shouldn’t be overlooked. Highlights include the funky and fuzzy “New Age Babies (Aquarius)”, the bluesy “Turn The Screw”, some energizing funk by way of the single “We Broke”, and my personal favorite “The Lucky Few” (which features Rico Sisney).
