Bonnie Stone & Mindframe – Silence [LP]

Rapper Bonnie Stone and producer/arranger Mindframe go all out for their collaborative album Silence – a thunderous body of work filled with fiercely spit “anybody can get it” rhymes and gothic beats. After a wintry boom-bip introduction from Mindframe, Bonnie lets off a flurry of go-for-the-jugular lines on the song “Gone“. After taking a little time to train her target on clout chasers and ladies that only bring sex to the table, the Boston lyricist livens up the track by speaking on her own drive and determination. The backing track overflows with stabbing string samples, a looping soul refrain from a familiar source, and frenzied energy that seems to urge Bonnie on. The song “Plan” is a heavy stomping number that finds Stone and guest emcee Joe Mack mapping out their approach to staying grounded while chasing success (and paper) in the music industry’s “more flash than substance” culture. Not feeling the need to hop from scene to scene or use sex to get ahead, Bonnie‘s “get money” mantra is centered around having a rock-solid work ethic and a don’t-take-no-bullshit creed. A cinematic, stutter-stepping cut called “Slide Out!!!” follows next and slightly switches up the feel of the album that’s laid out prior to its arrival. The chest-out-proud bravado of the pair remains intact, but the song has a mercurial, almost experimental vibe to it and showcases a looser bob & weave flow from Bonnie. A subtle bit of experimentation from the pair to help keep listeners on their toes and an early favorite from yours truly. Another one of my favorite numbers from the LP has to be the operatic title track “Silence“, which touches down near the album’s apex-like midpoint. Stone‘s methodical flow and Mindframe’s window-rattling production both give off the sort of raw hip-hop energy that Evidence and The Alchemist radiate whenever they’re together. The album is rounded out by more standout entries like a thumping look at how crime & money rule the day in every ghetto/every city called “Cold World” and a funky head-nodder called “Can Get” that took me back to the days of bumpin’ Eddie Ill & DL mixtapes and Rawkus promos in my older brother’s Ford Escort. With the album Silence, Bonnie Stone & Mindframe introduce themselves as a pair of hungry underground artists looking to make their mark in the rap game by serving listeners stout-hearted hip-hop on their own terms.
