Citizens Advice – The Revolution Will Not B Streamed [LP]

On the album The Revolution Will Not B Stream’d, the St. Louis jazz-funk collective Citizens Advice jets off into earthy and spellbinding grooves that seem to filter their appreciation of syncopated electronica through the rootsy instruments of jazz and afro-funk.

The songs of the album are structure in such a way as to provide an airtight centering loop that’s nimbly expanded on by spirited guitars, clavinets, horn sections, and the occasional vocalist. Album opener Social Distancing” moves with the hectic energy of a young man jetting through Lagos on his trusted scooter in order to spend a little time with his special someone. It’s an infectious body-mover with a title that seems a little at odds with its bustling vibe, yet definitely set a good tone for the rest of the album. Other high energy numbers include a somewhat quirky jam called Steam Whistle– which features a fun little back-and-forth swing – and an all too brief number called “BulletHEAD” – which is just unleashed kinetic energy set to wax. Fans can rest assured, however, that the band doesn’t overlook the “jazz” aspect of their “jazz-funk” label, as tracks like Walking On Eggshells and Feel provide handclapping soulfulness and twinkling jazz-guitar brilliance respectively. Other highlights on the album include a graceful acid-jazz offering entitled Love Away, with its warm, mantra-like vocals from Yoruba Soul Records founder Osunlade and a soothing flight above the clouds called Find Me.

The liner notes for The Revolution Will Not B Stream’d reveal that the album was “Recorded at the start of the COVID-19 epidemic” and “…displays the anxiety brought on due to the changes” that erupted in the virus’s wake. And I have no doubt that the members of Citizen Advice used the creation of this album as something of an emotional release. However, I have a strong hunch that most listeners will take away a liberating sense of healing from the band’s debut album, and enjoy a momentary reprieve from the emotional demands of just living everyday life in 2020.

” This project is one based on funk with a ting of afro beat, soul and jazz elements. With features from label boss, Osunlade and Yoruba Soul veteran Miles Bonny alongside newcomer The Black Bond.” – Yoruba Soul Records
