Jansport J – Soulfidelity [LP]

Jansport J veers in and out of the jazzy and the chaotic with his newest instrumental opus, Soulfidelity. At times we are allowed to drift deeply into vapory atmospheres built around simple yet effective repetition and at other times we are jarred to attention and pushed to keep a laser focus on the choppy funk storm crash landing on our eardrums. There’s a sort of “scrolling through my hard drive” feel to the set. But there’s also a grainy, funk & soul sampling through-line that connects the 15 tracks of this project and seems to reveal a very specific period of experimentation in J’s musical history. Standout cuts include the string-laden title track “Soulfidelity” – with its tinkling fanfare, some stutter-stepping 60’s soul via the tune  “ByGones”, an energetic and celebrating theme called “Him”, and a busy and buzzing welcoming line called “Witwhateva”.
