GangaLee – La Esmerelda [EP]

Triumphant in her sound and distinctive delivery, rap artist GangaLee cooks up a flavorful batch of tracks on her La Esmerelda album – a selection that soundly dovetails the Florida emcee’s well-anchored Jamaican influences into the booming and stripped-down sound of southern trap music. The authoritative and methodical flow that GangaLee (pronounced “GONG-ah-lee) employs on the mic adds extra thump to her words, which are boastful, defiant, and arresting all at once. On the victorious “So Hard”, GangaLee plants her flag directly in front of the club’s sound system and rides a wave of dissonant chords and echoing percussions with a simple-yet-effective rhyme scheme. Revving things up a bit a little past the song’s halfway mark, our hostess dives headfirst into a dancehall patois to make the tune hit even harder. Toasting her own success as her observers gossip from the sidelines, the syrupy and spinning “They Talking” ups the ante on Ganga’s unapologetic style and makes the aspirational artist sound like a top-shelf cross between Lady Saw and Gucci Mane. To my boom-bap loving readers, you may think that that’s a jab. But when it comes to making catchy cuts that club-goers love, that is absolutely high praise. “The Volume” is another standout, even if it’s tone feels a hair darker and more menacing than most of the set. Using the track as a stage to lay out her motivations, the edgy chords and stuttering drums support Ganga’s aggressive “get it by all means” energy. But it’s not all about celebrating and flossing on your opposition as the album opener “Morning Sun” and album closer “Vision Outro” provide us glimpses of an inwardly-looking GangaLee. In all respects, La Esmerelda is a smoothly moving, enjoyable experience that holds a notable amount of fire beneath is slow-flowing surface.
