Eto – Eto Brigante [LP]

New York state’s own Eto digs into one of the best crime flicks to ever grace the big screen – Brian De Palma‘s Carlito’s Way – and uses it as inspiration for his newest project, Eto Brigante. Emcee’s occasionally put out projects like this, which claim to be inspired by movies or books or what have you. But Eto and an impressive line of producers really remain focused on many of the central themes of the film’s plot and incorporate some of its most memorable lines and scenes into the music. Eto doesn’t simply empty out clip after clip of modern-day coke raps over tense instrumentals. His rhymes speak about chasing a dream, the cutthroat nature of crime & money, facing your own mortality, loyalty, and more. Standouts on the project include the symphonic opener “Walberto“, an on-edge but all too brief gem called “Pool Hall Scene“, a keyed-up piece with all the tension of a chase through some narrow back-alleys called “Training“, and a menacing stare down set to music called “Benny Blanco Club Scene“.
