Boldy James – The Versace Tape [LP]

New music from Boldy James courtesy of The Versace Tape project – a set that features guest spots from Westside Gunn, Elcamino, Keisha Plum, and Tiona Denice. While the man behind the music has been steadily making gains in the “respect & notoriety” department, releasing this project on Griselda Records should go a long way to advancing his name in even larger rap circles. In a vein similar to his work with The Alchemist, Boldy strikes a chord with rhymes that are stark, dark, and tensely genuine. That may be due to the (mostly) drumless, cinematic drums backing him up throughout the album. My personal top picks include “Bentayga“ with its tumbling soul-samples, some dust-laden crime verses on “Cartier“, and the haunting street-soul number “Roxycontin“.
