Lyrica Anderson – Bad Hair Day [LP]

Lyrica Anderson – Bad Hair Day [LP]

With her album Bad Hair Day, singer Lyrica Anderson delivers a slow-burning set that centers itself around the bittersweet themes and stormy emotions that will always make for great R&B music. While I am aware that Anderson is a reality TV celebrity, I’m not especially familiar with her small-screen work. So while that might add an extra layer of depth to the storylines of this album, Bad Hair Day stands on its own as a solidly produced 21st-century soul selection. We’re welcomed to Anderson’s world via the acapella-ish “Crashing Planes” – an openly tender number that reads like an unclothed diary entry. Over a somber piano and a spectral-like synth notes, the singer calls out her man as well as herself for past mistakes before suggesting that they both “crash” the turbulent journey that they now find themselves locked into. A pensive sense of hurt and regret also fill out other notable entries on the LP – like the contentious trap-soul score “Marriot“, a comfortless cry for attention called “Notice Me“, and a lay-it-all-on-the-table plea to start all over called “Plot Twist“. This album also reminds us how strong Lyrica Anderson really is as it gives up a fair share of empowered “you know what, fuck you!” type cuts. On the previously released “Act A Fool” serves up an ice-cold reality check to her disloyal partner. Letting him know that she can give as good as she gets, Anderson cooly reminds him that there are more than a few ladies and gents that would gladly take his spot if he ain’t up to the task. “Girls Have Fun” keeps that same energy flowing, as our siren taps into her inner femme-fatale and ropes listeners in with sexually liberated lines that are so much graphic as they are clarifying. And “Faithfully“(one of my favorite songs on the project) offers us a reenergized and notably more confident Lyrica who has seemingly left the past in the past and is moving onto bigger, better, and bawdier things.

On Bad Hair Day, Lyrica doesn’t tread new ground in the expansive field of R&B music, but she does prove herself to be an experienced and very capable songwriter/performer.
The album flows with a forward movement to it. We go from heartbreak to acceptance to resurgence over the course of 12 tracks. The album even ends with the kinda-cautionary “Brain” which gives us a wiser and more intuitive Lyrica who takes time to frankly lay out the rules and requirements to a potential new love before putting her heart back on the line. Hopefully, Bad Hair Day will move listeners and allow the LA starlet to remain musically relevant because she clearly has a lot to offer the R&B landscape.
