Producer JCSD shares easygoing chillhop sounds on LofiVE EP

It can be hard finding the time and space to relax. Life comes at you fast (as the kids used to say) and it’s easy to find yourself simply putting out one of life’s fires only to pick up and run off to deal with a brand new blaze. I’m sure that this is part of the reason why playlists centered around soothing chillhop instrumentals are so popular. No doubt we all appreciate the musicality of a laid-back beat and hypnotic melody, but there’s also little doubt that a momentary escape from the pressures of life keeps us all on an even keel. After drawing listeners in with the serenely jazzy and uncluttered “Suave” instrumental, producer/arranger JCSD expands his narcotic jazz-hop sound with the EP LofiVE.

The show commences with the rightly titled “Float”, which is a hazy ripple of vapory electric guitars and clouded keyboards that hovers above a metronomic rim-shot break. What arises from the combination of these elements is a peaceful welcome that feels as if it ushers in the deep Southern baritone of Big Rube at any moment. “Lofi Jungle” stack layer of upon layer of addictive loops on top of one another and spellbinds its audience of beat lovers with its capacity to sound busy and chilled at the same time. “SkateboardFloatin’ “ and “Don’tGetCaught” both dip back into “suspensefully structured zone-out” mode – with the former adding sheer-like piano jazz to JCSD’s breakbeat foundation while the latter shapes a somewhat spooky, drip-drop sample and a low-bitrate drum track into a potential soundtrack for a Graf King trekking through a train yard at night. Bringing everything full circle is “NightTimeCruisin’ “ which – as the name suggests – is a willowy bump that puts me in the mind of watching the world pass by whenever I get a chance to speed down the highway.

Surprisingly, “Suave” doesn’t make an encore on LofiVE. Granted, it’s a bit more spirited than the five tracks making up this EP, but the sax work on that single alone should have guaranteed it a spot. All the same, JCSD’s trip into the land of mood-setting chillhop makes good grades for giving us music to unwind to after a stress-filled day out in the wilderness of the civilized world.
