Defiant and distinctive as always, frequent allies Tha God Fahim and Your Old Droog release their new album The YOD Fahim – an excellent follow-up to their recently released The Wolf of Wall Street album. Individually, both men have consistently shown off their talent for whipping up steely and straight-forward rhymes as well as flaunted their gift for picking dope beats. This new album is just as potent as their previous collaboration and sets a murky yet soul-suffused mood that hits as heavy as a slab of asphalt
Through the yellow-orange glow of street lights and a tumbling jazz loop from beat conductor Nottz, Droog and Fahim fill the air with a truly dope lead single called “Slam Dunk Contest“. This first single from the project features the always dope Pharoahe Monch who throws brickbats at any skeptic who thinks that he may have lost a step on the mic (“Thirteen with a mason jar and some Jim Beam/So tell these children to chill, I’m still the illest workin’ the scene”). “Charles Barkley” is a firebombing demonstration of how dope the two emcees sound together. Droog starts things off in his signature laid-back style yet still manages to sound as if he’s in full battle-rap mode (“Rocking the O.G. Phoenix Suns color waves, orange and purple/ Calling out malarkey in my Charles Barkley voice, dawg you “turrible”/Talk weapons, your essence herbal/ And if you fake, I give a fuck about your dexterity with the verbals”). Fahim‘s verse rings out in a more “strictly business” way – offering up lines that layout his personal motto for making it in this life (“Don’t give me hype, I’m a serious individual/Evaluate the profits and divvy all the residuals/See, getting money is just a part of the ritual/And at an early age, I shied away from the typical”).
Some more great moments on the album include a low-rolling, Cohen Beats produced burner called “Stretch“; some hazed-out free smoke called “90 From The Line Remix (Sarunas Marciulionis)” (produced by Ghost McGrady), a funky fever-dream called “Reign Man” – that sets the rappers’ straight-talk style against a bizarre-yet-bumpin’ instrumental from Quelle Chris; and a menacing crime-funk styled gem called “Mailman” that features Tha God Fahim doing double duty on both the beats and the rhymes. Bristly and stout-hearted, Tha YOD Fahim is a towering opus from two steadily rising rap champions that is easy to sink into.
