Canadian Songstress, Melanie Durrant has delivered her latest single “Listen”; produced by the renowned Statik Selektah (Nas, Wiz Khalifa).

“Listen” is a soulful, hip-hop-tinged song about emotional abuse. However, if you listen closely, you’ll realize it’s about gaslighting and the breaking point of a woman on the verge of ending a toxic relationship.

The moment I heard the song, I thought of Amy Winehouse and how I’ve missed the emotion she brought to her music.

The structure of the song is so well thought-out and developed that Melanie begins the track using one voice to ask; “What is this? What is this I’m dealing with?” and transitions into another to express powerful indignation when she begins to list the things her partner is no longer pleased with.

“And now my jokes ain’t funny, and my hair’s too tight, and there ain’t even nothing that I can do right, according to you.”
