dóve – Can I Get a Witness [Single]

New music from Houston-born/Boston-bred singer/songwriter Kristina “dóve” Vega courtesy of her single “Can I Get A Witness” a song that introduces us to a young woman that has found a way to maintain her focus and move on to better things after experiencing a particularly foul betrayal by her former love. It’s a heartbreak story, but dóve adds a nice “no fucks given” attitude to her songwriting and performance that makes it feel more victorious than vulnerable. Given the “inspired by true events” nature of the tune, dóve’s simmering alto fills her lines with a real sense of maturity and acceptance. She definitely sells the cool, calm, & collected vibe that the song calls for. There’s also a fair amount of nostalgia created by “Can I Get A Witness” to the point that it feels like something you expect to hear from Millie Jackson if she had debuted as a 90’s hip-hop soul singer from South Central, LA. Our songbird possesses an impressive level of control throughout this number, inferring her hurt and healing in a very understated way. So while the song isn’t filled with ornate runs and riffs, those probably wouldn’t have fit very well into the “I’m so over you” feeling of the track.
