Just when the world is feeling like a never-ending cycle of bad news, here comes another deftly crafted, throwback-tinted burner from Edmonton’s own TARiiiQ. The track is called “Slide Out“ and it’s an airtight display of what results from a lyricist putting time and effort into his art. Lyrically, he goes for the jugular and doesn’t let up as he cycles through a myriad of rhyme styles (much respect for the Akineyle reference) and topics in an off-the-top-freestyle kind of way. The rising rap star says, “This song was made during a time of heightened social and political unrest, and the mental state I was in during the lockdown. [I] had to let some stuff out and also make some commentaries about my views and social issues. Inevitably using music as a means of expression and escapism as it describes in the chorus”. The production, courtesy of TARiiiQ himself, taps into a vein of jazz-laced, boom bap energy that recalls those fan-favorite “B-side” gems from labels like Rawkus and Groove Attack back in the early 2000’s. I’m telling you, the way that ‘RiiiQ switches up his flow throughout this cut makes it easy to forget that there’s only one man in the vocal booth – not a crew of emcees taking their turn on the mic. Dope work indeed.
“Slide Out” serves as a rock solid follow up to a wealth of singles from the young Canadian – including the recently released “Nite Stroll//Understand“, “How We Livin’//Sunshine“, and “Breath Slow//Where The Wind Blows“.
