S.I.N & B. Positiv – Nightlife 4 (Thinking) Introverts [LP]

This album is absolutely a must-listen for fans of jazz-hop music. The most important aspect of Nightlife 4 (Thinking) Introverts is the tone and mood that it captures. The album covers the introspect thoughts and situations of S.I.N. (aka Survival In Negativity) a hip-hop and jazz fan trying to find his way in the modern world. It comes with seven deep, reflective tracks about growth, internal struggles, life and death, and every aspect in between.

On Midnyt So(sigh)etyproducer B.Positiv sets a keenly cerebral tone with a frenziedly moving groove that flows like one of those broken-beat triumphs that Madlib put together under his DJ Rels persona. The producer/arranger gets his audience in the right mind state by sampling a TED Talk-ish speaker as she doles out some need-to-know facts about introverted souls. This is quickly followed by a buttery smooth verse from S.I.N. where he breaks down the nocturnal nature of the thinking introvert. Like a welcoming professor, S.I.N. speaks from a “man of the people” position – building a sense of camaraderie with his audience. The duo also set up a nice Midnight Marauders-type vibe through the use of beautifully layered samples and the robotic monotone of a female narrator that welcomes listeners to the album.

On Solituud, the pair cool things down a bit by constructing a warmly bouncing bop from some punchy drum chops and a soothing Fender Rhodes loop. S.I.N. bypasses any desire to portray himself as a man that’s always the life of the party as he sings the praises of taking time to cool out alone and just enjoy a little solitude. This “it’s nothing personal, I just enjoy having time to myself” attitude continues to shine on the single Wallflwr’s Anthem. As the title suggests, the song feels like theme music for those of us who feel a little awkward during social get-togethers, even if it doesn’t always show. The Baltimore-reppin’ emcee is a great storyteller, setting up an absorbing scene where he recalls the highs and lows of attending a house party.

Another memorable track on Nightlife 4 (Thinking) Introverts is Rewteen– a tune that deals with the moral question of what’s an innocent bystander to do when he or she happens to come across an interaction between the police and black people. The perspective of the thinking introvert is maintained, but by the end of the song, you feel as though the narrator has lost some connection to his fellow man by maintaining his “Mind your own business” attitude.

Overall, Nightlife 4 (Thinking) Introverts is a great album and well worth the listen – even if it’s not for everyone. The majority of the tracks are introspective and reflective, with an overall jazzy feel. As a result, anyone that’s looking for a bold, over-the-top hip-hop record to act as a soundtrack for a raucous nightlife will be disappointed. Instead, listeners are treated to a unique look into the mind and storytelling abilities of S.I.N as set to some dusty-digital slaps laid out by B.Positiv. So if you’re looking for something new, creative, and just out-of-the-ordinary enough to pique your interest, Nightlife 4 (Thinking) Introverts is the place to find it.

7/10 – Very Good
This is an album where the reviewer really enjoys the majority of the tracks and still finds it compelling even after multiple listens. Listeners will probably be listening to this album fairly regularly for at least a month or until something the same or better comes along. Even after that, the listener will most likely revisit the album a few times during the year.
