“Waste Ya Life” is a collaboration between emcees Shyland Flowers and Milah that serves up a nice dose of virtuosic wordplay over an understated yet infectious groove. Both emcees show off their skills with solid flows, complex rhymes, and commanding tones. Shyland has a great ear for nuance and uses it throughout his verse to make sure that his rhymes feel as though they are bubbling up in his mind like an off-the-cuff freestyle. And there is something about his voice that almost immediately reminded me of the acclaimed rapper/educator Asheru. Milah is just as dope with hers, spitting her bars in a more laid-back flow that is just as impressive as Shyland‘s but with a bit more fluidity to it. This is a triumphant collaboration and a bold challenge to anyone who believes that all rap music from this era fits into the same dumbed-down mold.
