The first thing that you’ll notice about Keni Can Fly‘s new song “99′ Pollen” is the trippy, almost hallucinogenic beat. It’s a wonky yet weirdly wavy instrumental backing with a tinge of chaos that gives it a very distinct character. The second thing you’ll notice is the voice of Keni himself, which has a peculiar sincerity to it. Sounding as if he is rapping through a scratchy bullhorn, the young rhymesayer delivers his layered lyrics in a triple-time rhythm that falls somewhere between Mac Miller and El-P – which in my opinion is pretty damn dope.
The best way to describe this song would be “effortlessly eclectic”. It’s hip-hop that sounds like chopped and screwed stream-of-consciousness jazz poetry, It takes more than a few listens to unpack everything, but it gets better and better with each replay. I’d recommend this song to anyone who likes rap music with quirky left-field production and surrealistic Run The Jewels-like flows.
