With her single “Hostage“, singer-songwriter Areej touches on the subject that you can’t forcefully hold on to love. If a relationship feels forced, it will only last until one member can find another connection that feels more natural. At the beginning of the song, our singer seems withdrawn, with the tone being very soft and almost mournful. As things progress, the song’s narrative goes from having Areej sounding as if she’s being held captive in a dying relationship to defiantly singing about her unwillingness to settle for less than what she deserves. Her performance is poignant and captivating and the entire song is beautifully recorded and sung. There’s a sense of sadness and longing here that listeners can easily relate to. We’ve all been through this at one time or another, and Areej does a great job providing her unique perspective on the subject matter.
