Trizz & MIKE SUMMERS – BASELINE CAVI [LP]

The BASELINE CAVI album takes you on a wild ride as you get to know Inland Empire representer Trizz, who’s more complicated than his sometimes brash exterior leads you to believe. Working exclusively with MIKE SUMMERS for this 14-track album, the two establish a strong chemistry that builds throughout the project. A large part of the album is heavy, dark, and street-centric, but Trizz‘s and SUMMERS still find a way to have fun with it and incorporate a few lighter moments at just the right moments.

Lead single “the inLAnd” is a G-funk throwback that’s sure to become a West-Coast club favorite. The track opens with some vintage synthesizers and a familiar groove before getting into the heart of the matter: celebrating Trizz hometown of Inland Empire as well as Cali hip-hop culture as a whole. The pair come out swinging, with Trizz spitting bars about his love for Cali life while MIKE SUMMER lays out a thumping beat that both Dam-Funk and Zapp could appreciate. The hard partying, funk-fueled vibes laid out by “the inLAnd” can also be found on tracks like “Shit Don’t Stop“, “Stimulus Package“, and “Tha Front Yard“.

Second single “Bless The Dead” reflects the darker side of the album, as the duo connects with rappers T.F., ICECOLDBISHOP, and Bale to pay homage to fallen friends and those who are still surviving in the streets. Some other darkly reflective moments on the album can be found in “Hollywood, Oh Hollywood“, “Red Headed Stepchild“, and “Had To Do It Myself“.

The album closes with the track “On and On“, a song that features fellow Cali native XV and reflects the duo’s drive to keep moving forward and to keep making music, even through all the hardships and challenges that they face. Overall, BASELINE CAVI is a great album that demonstrates Trizz & MIKE SUMMERS’ talent for hammering out songs that are both introspective and catchy, as well as their willingness to bring varying types of energy on a single album. A great way to bring in the cool weather of the fall season, this album is sure to be a hit with fans of the duo’s earlier work as well as those who are just discovering them for the first time.
