Jay Nice & Machacha – Heightened Senses [LP]

This 10-track EP was solely produced by Machacha and features street-certified verses from Jay NiCE as well as appearances by Big Cheeko, RU$H, Mickey Diamond, Pro Dillinger, and Kuji Young. The project opens up with “Came A Long Way”, a melancholic yet melodic number that chronicles Jay’s journey from the streets of Delaware to his current spot in the industry. The overcast vibes of that introduction continue with “A Bronx Tale (Act 1)”, which features a lamenting and drumless instrumental that brings out Jay NiCE’s storytelling skills as he relates the tale of finding out that a longtime friend got locked up for years.

Things pick up on “Old Feelings”, a cut that finds NiCE using his past to fuel the fire that drives him towards a bigger and brighter tomorrow. That fully-charged, “gotta get mine” energy continues to build on other album standouts like “Super Martin Bros.”, “Black Magick“, and my personal favorite, “The Scent of Dope“. Machacha does an excellent job of creating a distinct atmosphere for each track and Jay NiCE continually delivers impressive lyrics over the producer’s sample-heavy and cinematic soundscapes. All said, Heightened Senses is a solid effort, and with the amount of talent displayed on the project, it would be interesting to see where Jay NiCE and Machacha take their sound in the future.
