Lank G – I’ll See You Soon [EP]

Lank G‘s I’ll See You Soon is a surprisingly excellent album. Not surprising in the sense that I expected less from him as a performer, but surprising in the sense that Lank is a great writer and singer whose work was not even on my radar until I happened to casually come across one of his singles. He has great control over his voice and consistently showcases its warm and rich timbre, but doesn’t let it go to his head and overdo it.

His choice to make most of the rhythms on this EP heavy and slow is a great call, as it allows him to showcase his range and power without being overshadowed by the production. The album’s opening track, That’s What I Said“, is probably my favorite song on here. It has a nice throwback feel that takes me back to some of the most memorable moments of late 90s/early 2000’s R&B while also having a fresh and modern sound. The song’s production is darkly breezy, containing heavily thumping rhythms and sweeping chords that really allow the track to glide along with ease. It also features some catchy lyrical lines and hooks that really stick with you. “Dear You” is another standout on the album, with its reverberating acoustic piano, simmering coos, and eclectic arrangement. What starts as a sentimental letter full of heartfelt rhymes to a distant lover calmly morphs into a slow-burning soul confession near its midpoint before crashing into a pitched-up hip-hop soul piece towards the end.

The rest of the album is filled with equally impressive entries, including “FineAF” and “Amnesia,” which are both smooth trap-soul numbers with an infectious energy that makes them easy to vibe to. “FineAF” especially has a wonderful groove to it thanks in part to its subtle acoustic guitar lines and loosely structured rhythms, which makes it feel like you’re being carried along on an easy-flowing wave of sound. The album ends on a high note with a swanky bilingual number called “The Valley“. It features some great punchy drums, soulful electric guitar runs, and devil-may-care love verses from Lank G and guest vocalist JANC.

Overall, I’ll See You Soon is a solid album from a promising new artist. Lank G has an engaging voice and his songwriting is crisp and catchy, which makes him a great fit for the current sound of post-trap R&B dominated by acts like PARTYNEXTDOOR and Bryson Tiller. If Lank G continues to develop his craft, he could easily be one of the most popular and prolific artists in the genre. The finished product is great, and I can’t wait to see what the artist does next!
