Sargeant X Comrade – Call You Back [Single + Video]

Many listeners are seeking a mellower sound at this time of year to go with the contemplative mood of winter. With that in mind, it’s difficult for me to think of a song that matches the calming mood of staring out at cold raindrops on a window pane more perfectly than Sargeant X Comrade‘s most recent single, “Call You Back“. Singer Yolanda Sargeant‘s sweetly drifting, well-aged whiskey voice and producer/arranger Evgeniy “Comrade” Bykovets‘ soothing lo-fi soul arrangement create a relaxing atmosphere that makes you want to grab a warm drink and watch the world go by outside. This is very fitting considering the fact that the tune is about taking a little time to unplug from the outside world to recharge your batteries. Sargeant‘s smoky rasp is a perfect complement to Comrade‘s plush Fender Rhodes chords and 12-bit drums, sounding like a collaboration between a time-displaced Billie Holiday and a Mo’ Wax-era DJ Krush. The track’s video does an excellent job of capturing the tune’s super chill mood, with Sargeant lounging in an apartment filled with her vinyl records and vintage furnishings while avoiding repeated phone calls. This is a song that is exceptionally easy to get lost in and it’s easy to see why so many people have found comfort in its easygoing nature.
