LA-based emcee Dephree comes through with the bumpin’ and darkly fun single “Ving Rhames” which paints a picture of the rapper’s irreverent and often mocking approach to the world around him. Dephree handily blends his tongue-in-cheek bravado and witty ethos with a throwback approach to rhyming that almost immediately reminded me of Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty (which is high praise coming from a dyed-in-the-wool Rawkus/Eastern Conference fan such as myself). Bringing a bit of flippant fun to a music scene that can often be overly serious, Dephree stands out as an artist that is willing to make you grin a bit while still making your head nod. Producer/beatmaker King Graint laces the track with a wavy beat that pairs a breezy guitar loop with some punchy boom-bap drums – creating an infectious groove that brings out the best in Dephree.
