Dee Black – I Used To [Single + Video]

In his new single “I Used To,” Baltimore-based rapper/label CEO Dee Black demonstrates how hip-hop was a major influence on him during his formative years, for better or for worse. Soul-searching, nostalgic, and entirely relatable, the track explores how Black has changed as a person over the years and how he’s altered his approach to his music and his life. His lyrics are honest and open and never wallow in self-pity or come off as contrived. Instead, they are a mix of self-reflection and a celebration of everything that Dee has managed to achieve in his career thus far (which includes growing in his faith as a Christian, starting his own independent record label, and executive producing a Billboard charting album by Eshon Burgundy). The song’s video is directed by Will Thomas, who intercuts images of a young black kid watching older dudes hanging out in the park with clips from rap videos and album covers. And while the video ends on a sad note, the song itself is a testament to how powerful music can be and how it can have a positive or negative impact on people’s lives.
