Substantial‘s latest single “1580” takes listeners on a nostalgic journey to the 90s, reflecting on the impact that the DC area radio station WPGC-AM aka “Flava 1580” had on him and his partners as young men and aspiring artists. Working alongside fellow DMV-reppin’ sound providers T.Lucas and DJ RBI, Substantial and his comrades offer fans some airtight rhymes, razor-sharp cuts, and a bumpin’ “straight from the crates” beat as they pay tribute to the late lamented radio station. To offer up some context for those of us that didn’t grow up in the area, the station was known for its focus on hip-hop and go-go music and was a significant part of the local culture during its short-lived run. And if it played a role in shaping the vibrant music scenes in and around P.G. County, then the entire hip-hop world has reason to celebrate right alongside the trio. So much amazing and well-loved talent has come out of that area, and Flava 1580 AM undoubtedly played a role in helping to shape that legacy. This is dope work indeed and another solid single from Substantial‘s soon-to-drop Adultish album.
