Cool Company – Miss Behavior [Single + Video]

Cool CompanysMiss Behavior,” from their album Know Better, brings a straightforward, no-nonsense funk vibe that’s easy to get into. This Brooklyn duo, who started out as high school friends, have since turned into an all-killer, no-filler musical combo who really did their thing on this one. The song’s got a catchy, layered beat with wavy electronic elements and grounded jazz-funk guitar loops that keeps the carefree vibe alive.

Yannick Hughes‘ voice fits right in, sporting a rich, warm voice that flips from a solid mid-range to a smooth falsetto without breaking a sweat. Our man in B.K. tell a story we can all relate to — grinding all week and then letting loose when the weekend hits: “All damn week I been slaving/ been so innocent, time I caved in.” It’s about hitting pause on the usual and diving into what sparks joy.

Then there’s the music video. Directed by Saleem Barbados, it’s an offbeat throwback that shows the band on the set of an old-school variety show, playing their hearts out until things take a turn for the worse (and by “worse” I mean “gross”…like Tromaville level gross). It’s a well-done piece that fits hand-in-glove with the upbeat vibe of the song, even if the story it tells goes off the rails.

Miss Behavior” doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. It’s got a beat that’s easy to get into and a bassline that doesn’t quit. It’s the kind of song that doesn’t need to be overthought — just enjoyed. And that’s what Cool Company seems to be going for: good music that feels like a Friday night after the shift ends. It’s not trying to reconstruct the blueprint, just sketch in some bold new lines.
