Twin Hector – SPECIAL [Single + Video]

In Twin Hector‘s “SPECIAL,” there’s a polished combination of veneration and innovation. The track, a reinterpretation of D’Angelo‘s infamous “Untitled (How Does It Feel)“, maintains the original’s sexually charged spirit while introducing Hector‘s (aka Tai’Yon Hector) distinct flavor. It’s a bold move, reworking a classic. But Hector gains ground by brilliantly capturing the energy of the original while adding his own unique twist.

“SPECIAL” opens with Twin Hector‘s voice, immediately gripping and enigmatic: “I said you’re special. Oh so special you are/ Let me love you baby, til you can’t take no more.” These lines smooth the way for a song steeped in deep emotional and physical connection. The song’s heart lies in its unguarded exploration of love and lust, a theme that the L.A.-based crooner relates with a plain-spoken honesty. “And there… there ain’t nobody out…I choose over you/ And there… there ain’t nobody out… I love more than you,” he sings, delivering a pledge of devotion. 

Co-directed by Ben Tyler and Twin Hector himself, the accompanying music video is a homage to D’Angelo‘s much talked about original rendition but with Hector‘s subtle tweaks. The lighting takes on a darker, more seductive quality, bathed in a black-gold shimmer that amps up the song’s sexy nature. If I’m honest, I think it’s a ballsy move to redo such a well-known and beloved piece. But in this case I also think that it proves to be a winning one.
