Wess – Adolescence [Single + Video]

Wess‘ “Adolescence,” with JustDan Beats at the production controls, builds a story packed with the bumps and wins that show the change from youth to maturity. The song—complemented by a Lunaverse-directed video—troops across the stormy ground of youth, connecting with everyone’s search for their true self when things get tough. Set against North Carolina’s backdrop, the video transitions from soft tree canopies to dice games and masked stick-up kids scrambling in the shadows of towering buildings – all while Wess spits his bars into the camera in a deadpan, Wes-Anderson-flick type way.

The lyrics, “Mama said to get your shit in order, ‘fore you end up scrubbing toilet water/ Me I’m with the thuggish ruggish gangsta noises, middle finger to the law and lawyers” align guidance with the grim prospects that shadow missteps in youth, marrying wisdom with the uncompromising reality of life.

In “Adolescence,” Wess invites us to see our own stories in his, sketching out scenes of coming of age in a world that seems more inclined to hinder than to help. This song tells us that it’s okay to struggle with who we are, and the video shows the method and the madness of being young and lost in the whirlwind of figuring it all out.
