Vee Calixte’s latest cut, “You…“, unpacks the twisted dynamics of a rocky relationship. Producer/beatmaker Wavy Bagels controls the soundscape, spinning a wavy sound that scaffolds Vee’s dissection of love’s challenges.
Kicking off with “Love ain’t the same/ Is it love or a game?/ We keepin’ score or keepin’ it pure/ Is it love or is it war?” Vee throws down a challenge right at our feet, prodding us to rethink if our romantic lives are as genuine as we believe. His dive deepens with unapologetic imagery that goes hard, “The sex is aggressive/ applying pressure, mixing pain with pleasure/ We all selfish or self righteous/ Just wanting people to like us/ Or we trying to like ourselves/ So we doing whatever will help.“
As Vee flows deeper into the track, he lays bare the emotional wear and tear of playing love’s game where no one seems to keep score fairly. “Can’t take it personal cause it’s all a game,” he spits, highlighting the senselessness of trying to find blame or reason in the mess of warring hearts.
The outro is a persistent and hard-to-miss call against the deceit and manipulation that slowly poisoned a love from within. “You not innocent, you a hypocrite/ You ain’t a victim, you manipulative,” Calixte plainly speaks, marking a line drawn; pure and simple.
With a sound that slaps like a classic Slum Village cut and lines that cut deep, this is a piece that hits home, blending rhythm and reality in a very dope way.
