The first two seconds of the intro to Jucee Froot‘s “Really Like That” made me excited for the beat. It opens like an all-bass twist on an 80’s synth number (think Rockwell and Oran “Juice” Jones – 🙄 okay fine look them up – I’ll wait. And before you ask, yes that is Michael Jackson singing in the background, and yes, it’s okay to laugh because the ’80s were a wild, hilarious ride. If you didn’t make it the end of the Oran Juice Jones‘ song “In The Rain“ the last minute or so is worth a listen for the laughs alone. Just pure comedy gold.
Anywhoooo!
I got super excited by those first two seconds and prepared myself to be impressed. Unfortunately, I over-prepared. The beat maker didn’t push it far enough. There are promising moments later in the track, but the beat never quite reaches its peak. The track features Bryson Tiller, who I find to be the most appealing of the sing-song rappers. His lyrics here have the flair I usually find lacking in this sub-genre and he, thankfully, limits his use of nonsense sounds to the intro. Initially, I struggled with Jucee Froot‘s style, but her creative lyrics eventually helped me find an appreciation for her flow. So, while it might not hit the mark of a timeless classic, “Really Like That” still stands as a solid entry with plenty to appreciate.
