Avery Raquel – You [Single]

Avery Raquel – You [Single]

Avery Raquel’s “You,” straight off the upcoming Scratching At The Surface EP, is the kind of slow burn that creeps up on you like a patch of sunlight breaking through the clouds – catching you off guard yet filling you with an unanticipated joy. Jacob Soucy stitches together a backdrop that’s all warm, velvety tones, with Avery sliding in like a breeze—soft, but carrying a whole lot of weight. She’s laying it all out there, no filter, just raw emotion wrapped in that sweet, smooth voice of hers.

Avery‘s lyrics hit deep, like they’re pulling at threads you didn’t even know were loose. When she drops “You paint colors with your words / But always paint outside the lines/ The truth is never meant to hurt/ But not meant to ease your mind,” it’s that feeling of trying to piece together someone who’s all mixed signals and hidden meanings. It’s like trying to catch smoke with your hands—slips right through, but leaves its mark. And then, the chorus sneaks in like a jab dressed up in velvet: “Cause yooou/ You break me down/ This feeling, something new/ I don’t know what to do.” She’s letting you in, but just enough to keep you guessing.

All the while, the beat’s been lurking, subtle but steady, setting the stage for what’s to come. It starts off low-key, like a secret shared in the dark, with that electric piano giving you just enough to lean in closer. Then it all comes together, slow and steady, with those bass notes stretching out like a long sigh, the jazz guitar plucking away at your defenses, and the drums laying down a groove that’s just gritty enough to keep it honest. By the time she’s on that “For you…” loop, the song’s sunk its teeth in deep—you’re caught, no escape, and maybe you don’t even want one.
