Ida Divine, breezes into the spotlight with her brand new album Divine Timing – a heartfelt set that finds the Brooklyn soulstar continuing to flesh out her deeply stirring and conversational approach to performing and songwriting while still satisfying the ever growing squad of diehard fans that are dedicated to her unique sound. The album opens with “Infinity“, a track that firms up the richness of Ida‘s slightly husky contralto singing voice with a rapidly-firing drum-machine swing and distantly glinting keys – even as the lyrics and their message remain somewhat allusive on the first couple of replays. It’s followed by a syrupy trap-soul tinted gem called “Nice” which feels like a spiritual sister to her 2017 track “Python” as it delivers its slower tempo, mixtape-ready vibes with low-key gusto. The track finds the singer ruminating about her life – past and present – in a cool & cocky way while channeling the same energy as “Boss” from The Carters‘ remedy album from last year. Other standouts include a beautiful serving of bluesy throwback-soul called “Small Town“ (that would go for hundreds of dollars if someone like Madlib or 9th Wonder found it on a white label 45 in Japan) and the simply hypnotic “A Million Stars“ which puts Ida’s skills as a singer on full display as she takes deep dives into the lowest tiers of her vocal register then rockets upwardly towards brilliantly shining highs just a few lines later ( I can see this track quickly becoming a show closer during tours and performances).
In short, Divine Timing is an engaging mix of the personal and the poetic in terms of vibes and arrangements, and not only serves as a dynamic follow up to Marshmallows & Machetes but also delivers a dynamic bit of nu-soul and hip-hop that fans of albums like Georgia Anne Muldrow‘s Overload and Bilal‘s A Love Surreal are sure to get into.
