New music from singer Steffanie Christi’an who conjures up a steady driving and ultra pure rock n’ rolla flair on her most recent album It’s Complicated – a set that effortlessly dances between hammering hard-rock peaks and subtler (but no less striking) pop-rock valleys. Highlights include a raucous rock-out called “Cocaine“; a dramatic bit of emotional openness called “Limbo” (which gets a video work up from director Karl Kingson); an arena-rocking shot at the trappings of wealth and First World privilege called “Covergirl” (which seems to slyly dabble in a bit of synth-laced EDM energy just for good measure); and a beautifully marching, blues & soul tinted gem called “Square” (which is my personal favorite because of the Mad Max-era Tina Turner energy the cut gives off). Also, the opening instrumental/interlude “Empty” is an especially nice number as it delivers that same “the show’s about to start” energy that fills the venue when you catch a band’s live show and you’re patiently waiting for the frontman frontwoman to take the stage.
