Producer/arranger TROX has a gift for putting together pieces of music that seem to made up of hundreds of moving parts and flashes that same beat-making genius on the instrumental set Late 80’s Baby – a soundtrack that proudly wears its West Coast G-funk influences on its sleeves while also pushing the sound beyond simply rehashing what’s been done before.Throughout Late 80’s Baby, TROX tweeks melodies, changes up rhythms, and generally moves things around in such an expressive and fluid way that the soundpieces could serve as backing material for a collabo album between DJ Quik and the French outfit Breakbot. Some of my personal favorites include the synthy and slick “What You Want“; a pair of nobily draped themes called “Church Break I: Hallelujah“ and “Church Break II: Lift Me Up“; a syrupy trek through the stars in a smoke filled Cutlass called “V.S.O.P“; and the big stomping slice of NorthWest drum-funk called “Drug Trade“.
