Ty Farris & Trox -Room 39, Pt. 1 [LP]

With the (re)release of Room 39, pt.1, Ty Farris and Trox prove that they really outdid themselves and crafted a great album that was beyond the world (and limitations) of the generic, rootless hip hop that flooded the scene in 2017. The fourteen-track set is a celebration of self-determination, an ode to Farris’ hometown of Detroit, and an appeal to fans of hard-hitting “straight from the crates” hip hop. From start to finish, this feels like the work of a seasoned producer/emcee tandem in the same vein as Torae & Marco Polo or Bumpy Knuckles & DJ Premier.

Welcoming listeners to the album is the opening number “Welcome to Room 39” where Farris takes a few moments to speak to his audience on a personal level before he starts barking into the mic like a man with something to prove. At this point in his career, Ty has proven himself to be a top-tier emcee who consistently supplies his fan with grimy street-themes. Trox wisely sets his partner up for success, matching Ty’s often intense wordplay with triumphantly stepping horn loops and punchy drums for most of the track. On “Ghetto Survivor” Ty provides a glimpse into life as he has seen and lived it – a struggle to get ahead and stay true to oneself in the process. Other standouts on the Room 39, pt.1  project include: a dark-tinted and heavy-hitting heater called “Where I Live”; an expansive number called “Hold On” that features a big slapping, gospel-steeped arrangement from Trox and a guest verse from Detroit lion Royce da 5’9”; and an intense and cinematic hitter called “Middle of Mayhem”.

By all measures, the duo of Ty Farris & Trox are onto something with this first entry in what now appears to be a series of releases. You can see expansive potential for future development into a cherished staple in Mr. Farris’ catalog – much like his “No Cosign Just Cocaine, album/mixtape series. Simple and plain, this album still delivers and I’m psyched to hear what comes next for this pair. Get at it, fellas.
