Benjamin “Benny” Starr and the band FOUR20s sink deep into a stream of riveting poetry, hip-hop music, and jazz on their newly released musical work A Water Album. Throughout the album Benny revisits water as a centralizing theme and often uses it as a lead-in into other issues that not only resonate with him as an artist but also connect with the very engaged audience enjoying the show (did I forget to mention this album was recorded during a live show?). Some of my personal favorites include a feverish confrontation (or inspiration depending on your view) called “The Water Keeps Rising“; the swirling recollections of a life reincarnated that is appropriately called “Nostalgia” (which features sweet harmonies from singer Shaniqua McCants); a fire-bombing trap-meets-jazz gem entitled “Flowers” (which features some flame rhymes from Benny and his brother-in-arms Matt Monday); a zoned out number called “Forever, Love” which serves as a deep dive into the bone and tissue of that thing that we humans call “love”; and a serene bit of ambient-soul that is deceptively titled “War” (which features floating vocals from singer Niecy Blues). All in all, A Water Album is a beautiful batch of jazzy-hip-hop-poetry that even less than casual poetry fans will fall in love with.
