Aeriel – Sad Girls Club [EP]

On the album Sad Girls Club, dreamily lit sounds and late night vibes take the lead and deliver a string of ever-engrossing, future-soul beauties from young L.A.-based singer Aeriel. While a very cool and musing point of view definitely runs throughout the project, the album’s title is a curious one as Aeriel‘s music feels more sultry than sorrowful – even when her words are lamenting past mistakes or hurt feelings. For instance, on the album’s catchy lead single “Be Down“ a missed opportunity to become “more than just friends” with an admirer still feels flirty and even fun despite the song’s bittersweet lyrics (like how Mary J Blige‘s “Real Love” is really a yearning torch song that just so happens to be set to a energetic New Jack-Swing beat). Similarly, the album’s closing number, a beautifully smokey number called “Selfish“ deals with the need to guard your heart and “look out for #1” after being betrayed by a love. However, the song FEELS empowering and sexy – not only because of its slow-stirring synths and midtempo drums, but also because of Aeriel‘s up-close-and-personal delivery. Other standouts include the shimmering EP opener “Good On Ya“ – which places the young songstress in the shoes of a confident post-breakup survivor giving her ex a dismissive “…bye Felicia” over a radio-ready, trap-soul instrumental. There’s also the smoldering anthem called “Motion” as well as another piece of dope work called “1000“.
