Check out the article This Florida Woman Had To Travel 10 Hours By Bus To Have Her Voting Rights Restored from reporter Kira Lerner which details how a Miami resident named Takesha Tyler traveled to the state’s capital in order to meet with Governor Rick Scott (R) and the Florida Clemency Board so that she could petition them to restore her voting rights. The story also highlights how Governor Scott has made it harder for Floridians to restore their voting rights after being convicted of a felony and how many citizens are left disenfranchised for several years/decades after paying their debt to society.  After reading the article, be sure to catch up on the latest news from Kira Lerner by making sure that you’re connected to her via the social links listed below.

When Scott became governor in 2011, he made the process for Florida citizens to restore their voting rights significantly more difficult. He instated long waiting periods and chose not to allow anyone to have their rights automatically restored. While Florida’s previous governor, Charlie Christ, restored rights to 155,315 people during his four years in office, Scott’s administration granted just 2,488 petitions in his first six years in office.
