Greg Spero & Spirit Fingers – PEACE [LP]

Pianist/composer Greg Spero and his band Spirit Fingers shape into being a sprawling yet cohesive album with their recently released PEACE LP. The set opens with a frantic fusion workout called “Nails“ that allows each band member to let loose in a harmonious eruption of sound. Spero starts things up with a breakneck piano riff before the rest of the band rush in, mosh pit style, to add to the amped energy of the song. Things continue with “Spirit Food“, a subtly stirring electro-jazz-funk spark that find the bandleader taking something of a back seat to the captivating interplay between drummer Mike Mitchell and guest saxophonist Braxton Cook. An easy to overlook but absolutely essential part of this track is the steady pulse of Maximilian “Max” Gerl bass, which adds a tension akin to an alarm ominously sounding as a city descends into crisis. PEACE delivers even more gems, with songs like a nostalgic and warm number called “London Blues” that pairs guest singer Judi Jackson‘s fine jazz-scat vocalizing with bassist Max Gerl‘s cool, upright walking bass lines. We are also treated to a playful call-and-response exchange between Spero and Jackson that gives the tune a lovely live-and-off-the-cuff quality. There’s another Judi Jackson appearance on the song “Goodbye” which stands as one of my favorites. On it, Mitchell and Spero build warm, free-floating rhythms that glow and dance like dust in a sunbeam as Jackson‘s dreamy-demure vocals glide atop the fireworks below. A beautiful amalgam of smoky soul-jazz and fast-driving, electronica-informed energy that meshes surprisingly well. My final standout pick is the emotive “Earthbound“ – a resonating piece that feels like it was meant to flesh out a wordless scene in a film where our protagonist has a moment to reflect before making a decision that he/she knows will have long-lasting ramifications.
