Koralle – Fonografie 1 [LP]

Koralle, the Italian producer that made quite an impression on me with his beautifully layered “Mom & Dad” instrumental a couple of months ago, steers fans of chilled nu-jazz beats to a lush audio oasis with the release of his Fonografie 1 album.

The brief (just under 20 minutes) but satisfying body of work is fluid in its sound and impact, even when the wordless moments give way to stout and steady verses from a guest emcee. Koralle avoids bloating his instrumentals with effects and studio wizardry to make them feel expansive. He instead chooses to thoughtfully expand on grooves in the way that a small jazz combo would if they were trying to flesh out one member’s bare-bones idea into something meatier. The previously mention “Mom & Dad” typifies the airy and spacious sound that flows throughout Fonografie 1 – offering up nocturnal harmonics that drift and dash all across a warm bassline and drum kit. Tracks like “Livin” and “Snakes” also fall into that “late-night cool out” category, with the former offering up a uber-catchy loop from a soul-singer while the latter fills the room with wild nature sounds that feel as if they were lifted from a sweltering rain-forest. Londoners Isatta Sheriff and Turt dole out some well-timed rhymes on the tunes “Laid Back” and “Fuel” (respectively). For her entry, Isatta goes against the mellowness hinted at in the “Laid Back” song title and rips lines that are defiant and passionately spit. She fire shots at hype-beasts in the hip-hop game, gives a “big up” to those she respects, and stakes her claim as a hungry emcee that’s always ready to put in the work. “Fuel” is a groovy and introspect number that allows Turt to meditate on his life and family over some filtered rhythms and staccato melodies. The remaining tracks – “Brujos (Interlude)“, “Raymond’s Book“, and “F10” fill out the album with nostalgic downtempo vibes that and bring the set to a rewarding close.
