The Black Opera – Return of King Legend/Darkness/Black Friday [Singles]

New music from The Black Opera collaborative by way of the singles  “Return of King Legend“, “Darkness“, and “Black Friday“. The first of the three entries is an organically glitchy, future-funk piece that wouldn’t be out of place next to some forward-leaning goodness from Georgia Anne Muldrow and Declaime. While both teams – The Black Opera and the SomeOthaShip Connect gang – have deftly advanced ideas of afro-futurism in music, TBO continually creates sounds that are more approachable to hip-hoppers who grew up 90’s era New York straight talk (from black America’s best). Produced by Monsuun, the song has a distinctive, almost rootsy feel to it – with Afro-Caribbean percussions bubbling in the background alongside exotic synth pads and the reverberating boom of a classic drum machine. “Darkness” plays up insular feelings of being confined or frustrated. It’s a dense piece that touches on racism and politics but its steady pulse and hymnal chorus can give you a cathartic release if you just let yourself sink into its swirling sounds. Darkly beautiful probably best describes it. Bringing up the rear is “Black Friday” –  a raucous and rousing anthem that comes crashing out of the gate with eerie keyboards, thunderous drums, and rhyme-cipher flowing. It’s a dope fusion of the metal-like bars that have held hip-hop’s foundation together for so many years and the expansive artfulness that has kept it from simply becoming a stagnant past time. This final track is an “unearthed gem” from The Black Opera‘s vaulted hard-drives, but man does it knock like some shit that was inspired by the unrest from this past summer.
