SassyBlack – STUCK [EP]

New music from SassyBlack courtesy of the EP STUCK – a lean-muscled four-track set that hits the mark with its spirit of spontaneity and experimentation. SassyBlack’s voice slides so beautifully around her slinky, one-woman-band-styled productions and creates a vibe that is uncommonly tranquil. When you really allow yourself to sink into STUCK, it brings to mind that carefree feeling you get when you’re freestyling off-the-cuff songs while lying in bed and looking at sunbeams enter the room through cracked curtains or barely opened blinds. However, these songs are more fully-formed than the typical quick demos being spaghetti tested on Soundcloud. They are either straightforwardly soulful, subtly tongue-in-cheek, or a bit of both all at once. “Karen Don’t Care” is a satiric and smart send-up of the entitled type of women whose racist antics seem to create new viral videos on an almost weekly basis. It’s free of sanctimonious malice and just feels like a funny take on a serious (and kind of sad) state of affairs. “Anxiety (The Heat)” is a bouncy chant that orbits some warped synth pads and a perky 12-bit beat. The tune’s upbeat elation works like a soulful-house incantation that’s meant to keep any bad vibes at bay. SassyBlack takes a moment to lean into the cocky half of her moniker with the sexy-sassy “What Do You Want“. A lively slice of lo-fi funk, the track suggests liberation after too much time spent feeling frustrated – slinking from your speakers with a bit of self-assured poise. EP closer “Therapy” plays like a companion piece to “Anxiety (The Heat)“, but cast SassyBlack as a wise elder who been through the mire of negative thoughts and has reached a place where she can offer a steadying hand to those who have yet to make their way through stormy waters.
