Lord Juco continues to put in work, pairing his stark rhymes with grainy, soul-steeped production on the cinematically shaded SHADOWS 3 album. I don’t know why, but the general feel of this set makes me think about the 90’s flick Sugar Hill. In particular, Juco’s narrative taps into the same intelligent street-dude cool of main character Romello as well as the tense inner-riot of his wild brother Raynathan. Undoubtedly, the album’s moody piano-laden backdrops – which come to us courtesy of producer/beatmaker Bohemia Lynch – also play a large part in my association with the Harlem based crime-drama. Each of the four tracks are rock solid crime tales, but the monologue-ish “Stelvio” (which features Starker) and the sobering album closer “Scene Selection” are personal favorites.
