New music from Taylor Narain in the form of her sophomore album Messiah. This latest body of work continues Narain’s drive to make authentic and self-examining R&B and indie-pop music. Somehow the writing and melodies of this new selection feels more finely tuned than the previously released Sick Sad World EP – even as the production from past collaborator Alexander “12” Edwards seems to stretch out and become more expansive. In fact, the contrast between the album’s airy melodies and its full-bodied rhythms really centers the record and works well with the feathery feel of the Nashvillian’s timbre. Album highlights include the bumpin’ and breezy “Tuning…Tuned“, some hypnotic waviness that’s ironically titled “Shout!“, a beautiful finger-snap soul number called “C.R.O.W.N“, and a coolly marching creation called “As Above, So Below” (which feels just like the sort of thing that the Dreamville camp should be putting out during their random single drops).
