Bonjay & Queer Songbook Orchestra – Medicine for Melancholy (Live from Yaad Version) [Single & Video]

New music from the Ontario-rooted duo Bonjay (singer Alanna Stuart + producer/arranger Ian “Pho” Swain) as well as the Queer Songbook Orchestra courtesy of their rework of the song “Medicine for Melancholy“. Maintaining her cool even as she appears to be exorcising tightly held emotions, vocalist Alanna mystifies with her low-burning performance and enigmatic lines. I say “enigmatic”, but that’s probably more of a reflection of me as a listener than it is of the songwriter and her abilities. But even if I didn’t immediately digest every message being delivered, the weightiness of the piece definitely conveys hurt as well as resolve. Working with the Queer Songbook Orchestra really pushes “Medicine for Melancholy (Live From Yaad Version)” into a grand bracket – pivoting the electro-indie-rock spirit of the original into something that sounds ready for the theatre.

This newest release follows the Bonjay‘s 2018 album Lush Life.
